Accessed from the classical mid-nineteenth century corridors of Victoria’s Parliamentary building designed by Peter Kerr, a series of discrete support facilities have been carved into existing spaces to serve state politicians, parliamentary staff and visitors. Existing heavily moulded and french polished hardwood fenestration, doors and architraves, elaborate plaster cornices together with traces of classically carved bluestone revealed during construction have served as a framework into which the new spaces have been configured and finished. The designs introduced calacatta porcelain walling, walnut veneered partitions, vitreous floor tiling with burnished brass and aluminium trims to form a durable but elegant dialogue with the heritage context.
