community store, altona

St.Eanswythe’s Community Store has been designed as a stand-alone structure to mediate between the 1970s parish complex and the local shopping centre. The modulated and textural bowral brick walls form a protective enclosure from the vehicular domain behind and beside while implying a precious activity within. Rust coloured metal fins frame the display window and focus attention from the passer-by onto the display within, while large glazed sliding doors open onto the parish hall to facilitate communal activities. The display systems include versatile hanging rails and antique oak shelving and display cabinet. A staff tea station is concealed behind a large sliding panel at the rear with adjacent change room and sorting room.
